Opportunity Knocks Projects

The Opportunity Knocks Committee of the Junior League of Lafayette (JLL) is proud to announce the following projects for the 2009-2010 year. The Opportunity Knocks Committee is committed to addressing community needs by staffing and funding ten short term projects to local nonprofits agencies.

Opportunity Knocks 2009-2010 Projects

September 2009 - Goodwill Industries of Acadiana/Goodwill Gardens – Good Home houses young adults who have transitioned out of the foster care system and need assistance with the transition to adulthood. The project aligns JLL members to construct a garden at the Good Home to offer its residents a place for reflection, positive thoughts, and interaction while enjoying the peace and beauty of the outdoors.

October 2009 – Families Helping Families of Acadiana/Treats at the Village – This project provides a safe and inclusive place for individuals with disabilities and their families to trick or treat hosted by JLL members.

October 2009 - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana/ “Frightfully Fun” Halloween Party – A Halloween Party hosted by JLL members to be enjoyed by children previously with volunteers and those children on the waiting list.

November 2009 – United Way/Dolly Parton Imagination Library – JLL members register children to obtainage-appropriate books in their homes.

December 2009 – The American Cancer Society’s Boutique/Look Good, Feel Better Boutique – JLL members design and create a tranquil space for cancer patients to experience headware including wigs, hairpieces, turbans, hats, head scarves, kerchiefs, and other useful products.

January 2010 – Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC)/Day of Design – JLL members to provide a day of beauty with LARC residents making necklaces.

February 2010 – Lafayette Young Lawyer’s Association/High School Mock Trial Competition – JLL members assist in creating a mock trial for high school students in an effort to increase the students ability to speak in public, use critical thinking skills, and debate hot topics.

March 2010 – New Life Center/Housekeeping Start-Up Kit Project – JLL members assist in providing tools necessary to maintain a clean living area to women residing in a shelter.

April 2010 – Lafayette Council on Aging/Acadiana District Senior Olympics Games – JLL members attend the Senior Olympics and facilitate Wii game tournaments with seniors.

April 2010 – Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf/Girl’s Sports Day – JLL members to assist in facilitating sports games to promote health and wellness to girls ages K to 12 in the Acadiana area.
