What is the Junior League?
Our mission statement best describes what the Junior League is: The Junior League of Lafayette, Louisiana is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
What does the Junior League of Lafayette do to serve the community?
In 2007-2008, the League contributed over 2500 hours of volunteer time and have given support to agencies and institutions throughout the Lafayette community. The League is partnered with many local non-profits, working within their programs to help better our community. In addition, the JLL offers direct assistance in the form of resource and enrichment grants awarded to non-profit agencies. As part of its mission, the League also trains its volunteers to assume leadership positions once they are no longer active members of the League. Many League members sit as outside board representatives on the boards of nonprofit agencies throughout the city.How does the League determine which agencies/projects it will support?
The League takes volunteer requests. Our Community Research Committee will research and review each request to determine whether the request represents a critical need in the community and whether the volunteer service requested will meet the needs of the League's volunteers. The Community Research Committee then prioritizes the requests based upon a determination of the interest of the general membership, and presents the approved requests for approval.
How can my agency request volunteers and/or funding?
Any interested agency should submit an application to the League to be considered for volunteers and funding for their projects for the following. Contact the Community Vice President with any further questions.
How does the Junior League raise money?
The Junior League of Lafayette has two fundraisers. Our annual Tinsel & Treasures Holiday Market is a fun and exciting event where retailers from around the country gather in Lafayette for a three-day shopping event at the Cajundome Convention Center. The market is open to the public and tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 337-988-2739 or at the door.The League has three award winning cookbooks: Talk About Good, Talk About Good II, Tell Me More and Something to Talk About. Cookbooks can be purchased by calling1-800-757-3651.
Why does the Junior League raise money?
The money raised by the Junior League of Lafayette is largely given back to the community in support of community programming and through grants awarded to non-profit agencies. In addition to funding, hundreds of trained volunteers contribute to community efforts both in the area of child health and development, as well as other areas of need.
How can I become a member of the Junior League of Lafayette?
The Junior League of Lafayette conducts a Prospective Member Meeting in December of each year.Membership in the League is open to all women who are 23 years of age who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism. The Junior League reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins.
I am a member in good standing of another Junior League. How do I transfer my League membership when I move to Lafayette?
Contact the Corresponding Secretary of the League you are transferring from, and she will initiate and assist you with the transfer process.
I used to be a member of the Lafayette League, but resigned in good standing. How do I reinstate my membership?
Contact the Corresponding Secretary your desire to reinstate your membership in the Lafayette League and enclose current year's dues plus a reinstatement fee.
